Every year on the 8th of November, the day on which Wilhem Conrad Röntgen discovered the X-rays in 1895, we pay attention the huge contribution of radiographers to health care. This year 2020 even the more because of the COVID pandemic.
Usually events for the public are organised in the hospitals this day to show them what the relatively unknown Radiographer profession is about, but this year there are too many limitations under COVID restrictions to do so. Hopefully next year November the world is back to normal.
ESR Campaign: This one’s for you! International Day of Radiology 2020 dedicated to imaging professionals fighting COVID-19
On November 8, radiologists, radiographers and other medical professionals around the world will once again celebrate the International Day of Radiology (IDoR). This year, IDoR is dedicated to all imaging professionals and their essential role in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, making an indispensable contribution to the diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19 patients.
Through the IDoR 2020 motto ‘Radiologists and radiographers supporting patients during COVID-19’, the European Society of Radiology (ESR) invites everyone to celebrate the critical role that medical imaging has played during the current crisis. On this important day, the society asks imaging professionals across the world to pause for a moment, look back at their hard work and the challenges they have faced over the past months, and recognise their own contributions and those of their colleagues and friends.
In gratitude to the services imaging professionals around the world have provided in recent months, the ESR has collected all COVID-19-related lectures on ESR Connect and will be making them available to all, free-of-charge, for a period of two weeks. This content will be accessible from November 6-20 exclusively on ESR Connect and is a valuable resource for all professionals who continue to image, diagnose and treat patients with COVID-19.
In addition to these free courses, the ESR will be encouraging individuals and organisations (national radiological societies, radiological subspecialty societies, radiographer societies & allied sciences societies, imaging departments etc.) from throughout the world to share, not only their professional but also their personal stories to help inspire the imaging community during these challenging times. They can get involved in a number of ways by:
- Sending a report about their working experience during the COVID-19 pandemic. On this extraordinary year, an e-book of experiences will be created and published online to give visibility to medical imaging during the COVID-19 crisis. Individuals or groups are asked to send their report to IDoR2020@myesr.org by November 8, 2020.
- Sharing photos of you and your colleagues celebrating IDoR 2020 at your workplace. Individuals or groups can share their photos either by sending them to at IDoR2020@myesr.org (together with a brief description) or posting them on social media with the hashtag #IDoR2020.
In addition, the ESR encourages all radiologists and radiographers to amplify the visibility of medical imaging on November 8, by being particularly active on social media and remembering to use the hashtag #IDoR2020.
The International Day of Radiology is celebrated each year on November 8. It is a joint initiative of the ESR, Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and the American College of Radiology (ACR) and is supported by numerous international and national radiology societies across the world. The aim of IDoR is to build greater awareness of the value that radiology contributes to safe patient care, and improving public understanding of the vital role radiologists and radiographers play in the healthcare continuum.
